Re: Capone, Al (not technically a promoter or TP, but...)

Apropos of nothing, the 1987 Kevin Costner movie, The Untouchables , completely distorted its dramatization of Capone's tax evasion trial. In the movie, Eliot Ness (Costner) discovers that the presiding judge is on Capone's payroll, Ness confronts the judge and threatens to reveal the incriminating ...

Re: Schulz, Robert (civil injunction case)

When last heard of, in June 2008, Shulz had, just under the deadline, complied with a court order to provide the IRS with a list of the names & addresses of purchasers of his tax-dodging instructions. He then tried to regain some momentum by announcing a very flaky drive to get his interpretatio...

Re: Van Meters Pay High Price For Vow Of Poverty

These people are not, by far, the first to try to pretend they have taken vows of poverty while still hanging onto their money. Apart from the usual penalties for tax evasion, they should get an extra punishment for trying such an unoriginal and flimsy stunt.

Re: Flawed Logic

I have made an effort to find a court case that says outright that the income tax is an indirect tax, and I have found none. But I found several cases that said that, either, the income tax is not within the category of direct taxes forbidden by Art. I, sec. 9, clause 4, or else that the 16th Amendm...

Re: Flawed Logic

I wouldn't require "tons of cases". I'd settle for a single clear holding from a high enough court. In any case, whether or not the federal income tax is "direct" or "indirect", it is specifically permitted by the 16th Amendment, so even if other taxes of the same categ...

Re: A Reality Check for this August Group

The 16th Amendment explicitly says it authorizes "taxes upon incomes, from whatever source derived." It does not specify or distinguish whether this tax is, or should be, classified as direct or indirect. That being the case, if the income tax falls into a category that is otherwise not pe...

Further evidence (as if we needed it) that well-educated and presumably sensible people can be sucked into the anti-tax craziness.

Re: Bob Schulz's Bold Plan

For those with short memories, Schulz pulled this stunt in the summer of 2001, announcing he was going on a hunger strike unless the IRS sent spokesmen to debate him at a forum of his own choosing, set for the date he insisted on, (this is cute!) Rosh Hashona 2001. His little trick to make sure that...

Re: Kensai almost stumbles across an important truth

As part of the recent law increasing the penalties on frivolous returns, is a provision that, in response to a frivolous return the IRS will return same -- with a informative booklet about positions that have already been held frivolous -- to the taxpayer to give him opportunity and incentive to str...
