"Judges today are far more security-conscious than they ever have been."
And they should be. Sociopaths are subject to any number of event triggers without regard to their own personally-connected circumstances. They can assume the role of avenger with only minimal relationships.

The spread of distrust for the judicial system is a poison. It's exacerbated by promoters of anti-government organizations as well as by the simple fact that in all but routine civil cases, one side loses and the other side wins; the losers in the family courts are all too often emotionally-charged grenades with loose pins.

And there are examples of utter incompetence. Here in Texas, what should have been a routine appearance for not responding to a jury summons recently wound up with an arrest on that warrant and then weeks of jail time without a hearing - because of a clerical error. Up in Dallas, the conversion of a computer system stranded dozens of people behind bars.

Someone needs to get a handle on the PR side of the judicial system. Remember the concept of not being able to un-ring a bell; every time some perceived injustice gets a one-sided story in the press the Van Pelts and Hendricksons of the world are dancing the happy dance.

The EAA some years back challenged their membership to whack their local media outlets around every time some uninformed "reporter" offered up specious (often fear-mongering) information in aircraft accident stories. Seriously - the attention to accuracy in reporting those things is anything but diligent. Perhaps the legal profession needs to pay more attention to the media on their own turf when a local news outlet misses the point and provides fodder for the nutballs. [rant=off]
