I could understand the IRS position if they have not implemented a method to redact confidential information on the electronic version. I know that FOIA requests for documents will result in employees going over the paper documents and manually redacting such information to ensure that nothing of a confidential nature and/or security issue will be be disclosed.

HUH? indeed! Back in the last century, I spent one part of my career as a disclosure specialist. We used to routinely provide hard copies of transcripts and other documents that were prints of computer records. Under this interpretation, a taxpayer would be unable to access their own tax return if it was e-filed! I do believe that someone is going to have to make a retraction. Now, I could see if the situation is such that the IRS would have to print out the returns to provide them to people making inquiry. But, the last time I had occasion to review exempt org returns, I was able to access them on my home computer and print out what I wanted/needed.

Something tells me the issue has something to do with who it is that is requesting the information at this particular time. :mouthshut:
