Classic problem. Zero or i = infinity.
Eric, the classic numbers guy pig farmer. Current project: If Swine Post Cervical Artificial Insemination has an expected farrowing rate of 85% versus conventional catheter insemination rate of 88% (my personal rate is 90.2%) what is the advantage? Solution - conventional catheter insemination takes 2 to 5 minutes per animal (20 minutes for a gilt), while PCAI takes about 30 seconds. Add to the fun: PCAI needs 1/3 less active spermatoza but requires more experienced workers at a 25% wage premium. Determine the appropriate maxima and minima taking into account pig parity. A lovely operations research problem. Gut feel so far - reduce experienced manpower by one third but waiting for numbers which won`t come out for 25 days and then I have to modify the sperm dosage and see what the boar stud people have to say.

It's my understanding that a partial derivative is supposed to involve a function of more than one variable, but this one has only one (x).

I hate capchas and they are often provably wrong but there are no consequences for the captcha sadists.

You're (probably) correct. It should be d/dx rather than the partial derivative symbol.
