Hitler destroyed the synagogues at the beginning of the war. Pre-war Cologne, for example, had five significant synagogues; only one was rebuilt after the war. In Mainz, the biggest synagogue was only replaced in 2008, 70 years after it was destroyed. In Frankfurt, a history professor has actually attempted to reconstruct the buildings using a CAD program. Lubeck had only one synagogue survive, but neo-Nazis burned it down in the 1990s.

I just find it interesting that both Germany and Austria have spent significant money and time to put things back the way things were before the war, up to a point.
