I ran across this looking around at something else this morning. I did not remember seeing it on here before and didn't find anything in search so here we go:

I thought 419 was the number of the Nigerian Criminal Code which was winked at by the government, rather than the country code. (Yep, the calling code is +234.) Perhaps they were confused by the 809 scam, which also might be specifically directed at servicemen.

It would seem you are indeed correct Arthur. 419 is the Nigerian penal code relating to Advance Fee Fraud. 419 is also the are code for certain areas of Ohio.
