Thousands of hours wasted determining that there is about one "TP" reference per 200,000 records examined, none of which had any apparent adverse effect on any taxpayer. Close enough for government work.

Thanks, Congress, it's good to know that we spent probably a million-plus dollars to find out that the IRS doesn't often call a spade a spade. That's really useful. Very efficient. Next, in keeping with the high value of this audit, we should probably conduct an audit of paper clip and post-it note usage.

I was thinking of having it examine the IRS's ability to create rubber band balls and paper airplanes. Don't knock those airplanes, either. They are to wireless networks what sneaker nets were to wired networks.

I say we "create" a taxpayer and then get a disgruntled IRS employee to mercilessly type TAX PROTESTER all over the official documentation for that taxpayer. If there's hard copies, I would also suggest crudely scrawling same in red crayon. You know, to keep TIGTA on their toes...

Possibly. But Gottago's struggle to get right with the IRS would be even harder if the phrase "illegal tax protester" were plastered all over her files. If IRS management believes that taxpayers identified as tax protesters are "treated in the same manner ... as any other taxpayer", they haven't been paying attention.

Possibly. But Gottago's struggle to get right with the IRS would be even harder if the phrase "illegal tax protester" were plastered all over her files. If IRS management believes that taxpayers identified as tax protesters are "treated in the same manner ... as any other taxpayer", they haven't been paying attention.

If a taxpayer has been referred to the frivolous filing unit and/or has been hit with friv pens, calling them a TP isn't going to change their interaction experience with IRS employees...

Are IRS employees somehow immune to prejudicial thought and actions or responses that might jeopardize a taxpayer's rights?

The law was passed, the IRS routinely issues its "don't call 'em TPs" memos and reminders at almost no cost and "TP" and the like have pretty much been eliminated from the written IRS vernacular.

Which is probably an entirely pointless exercise considering that it can't take anyone dealing with a TP more than about a minute to figure out that they're dealing with a TP, or, alternatively to question whether someone who asks legitimate questions or makes legitimate legal points should have been previously referred to as a TP.

I took "freakin' waste of time and money" to refer to the TIGTA report and voluminous IRS response, which is no doubt an annual thing, probably into perpetuity. It's also probably applicable to the entire idea of "Congressionally correct" written IRS usage. Micro-management at its worst. I can't wait until they apply it to GM and Chrysler.
