Two HPD employees indicted for tax evasion

A grand jury has indicted two Honolulu Police Department employees for tax evasion, the state attorney general's office announced yesterday.

Officer William B. Gaspar Jr. was charged with four state counts each of failure to file tax returns and attempting to evade or defeat a tax. Gaspar did not pay $21,317 in state taxes during a four-year period, the attorney general's office said.

Police matron Laura Chun is accused of failing to pay $10,586 in state taxes during a five-year period. She was charged with five with four counts each of failure to file tax returns and attempting to evade or defeat a tax.

Failure to timely file a tax return is a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in prison and a $25,000 fine.

Attempting to evade or defeat a tax is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a $100,000 fine.

What is it with cops and tax protesting? There was once a whole ring of tax protestors in the NYPD, back when I lived there, and cops seem to be frequently represented in TP case law.
