I thought this would be about it being Summer in Australia.
The NSW Counter Terrorism and Special Tactics command assessment — obtained by 7.30 — suggests there are as many as 300 sovereign citizens in the state, and that their numbers are growing.
That's more believable than the 30,000 estimate for Canada.

canada lumps apples and oranges and then calls them all bananas. many groups or people with different beliefs, ideologies, religions, or opposing viewpoints on current 'government' systems get called sovcits. the gov and media will call everyone listed above freemen today, religious extremists tomorrow, domestic terrorists the next day, and environmental extremists next week.

canada has never been good at figuring out potential threats, group associations or underlying motivation. and not properly defining groups is a threat to the freedom of the normal citizens in general and a threat to folks improperly labeled as threats due to bad risk assessment of threats

I've never seen a basis for that 30,000 number. Somebody once said it somewhere and suddenly it becomes a semi-official statistic quoted everywhere. Lazy journalism as much as anything. So I don't think it is a case that "Canada" "lumps apples and oranges and then calls them all bananas" as much as it is an unsubstantiated meaningless number floating around. If it is based on anything at all except speculation by an unattributed source I'm not aware of it.

And some of it is influenced by those who have political axes to grind. As an example, there have been counts by the press and other groups, who watch the militias and sovrun movement, in the US that included the Tea Party movement, even though there was no real basis to believe that Tea Partiers were involved in sovrun movements as a whole. While there was an overlap in terms of some sovrunists also supporting Tea Party groups, they were a minimal influence and most of the Tea Partiers were simply disaffected Republicans or conservatives that were not happy with the Republican Party establishment.

Think it also helps to consider the source. Of course an anti-terrorism task force has an incentive to inflate numbers since it's kind of hard to justify funding just to deal with 300 SovCits.

Good point. Governments always inflate threats to justify more funding. I was amazed at the amount of government resources that went into the investigation of the Nanaimo Three crew given that they were just a small bunch of guys playing with toy badges.

It comes from the FBI's reports. As we know, in many respects Canada is 10 times smaller than America, including in population.

The FBI's own reports list as many as 300,000 sov. cits in all 50 states. It is not a far leap to think that rather actually doing their own work, CSIS merely took the American stat and divided it by a factor of ten !!!

EDITED TO ADD

By this logic, with Australia's population being about 2/3rd's Canada's, we can expect there to be as many as 20,000 sov. cits there !!! :sarcasmon:
