I just want to see all the George Washington photos.

Interestingly enough, last week I was watching a show on PBS where a geneticist had compiled a genetic map that detailed the migration of humanity accross the globe. Genetically, our progenitors came out of Africa, migrated to central Asia and from there, various branches moved down into India, into south east Asia, into what is now China, into Europe and finally into the Americas.

Those original progenitors that left Africa looked very similar to modern Africans - that is negroid/black. Environmental factors, dietary factors and a certain level of inbreeding led to the ethnic diversity we see today.

They probably bore little resemblance to modern Africans other than most likely having dark skin. Morphologically those ancient humans were very different, especially in their facial features, than any extant human group. This holds true especially with the first migration of modern humans at approx. 100k years ago.

There is a reason the aborigones of Australia and the dark Dravidians of southern India bear a strong resemblance to black Africans and that is they were among the first migrants out of Africa who almost immediately moved into southern India and swiftly moved into Australia - probably reminded them of their ancestral lands.

Uh, no. Australian Aborigines and Dravidians only resemblance to black Africans is the color of their skin. They are quite distinct genetically. Also, the Dravidians were most likely not the first modern peoples in the Indian sub-continent and modern humans migrated out of Africa tens of thousands of years before they settled in Australia.

In short, the racist cracker slinging the word "nigger" about descended from people who left Africa some 65,000 to 70,000 years ago. Or to quote Navin Johnson, "Sir, I too am a 'jungle bunny'!"

The crackers never see the irony in that, do they. Then again, he might be a YEC'er.

Seriously, it was fascinating. If you do it, and you have living relatives who have deep-seated beliefs in their ancestry (including a popular bit of mythology among one branch of my family), it can wind up as one of those things that everyone stops talking about.

Seriously, it was fascinating. If you do it, and you have living relatives who have deep-seated beliefs in their ancestry (including a popular bit of mythology among one branch of my family), it can wind up as one of those things that everyone stops talking about.

You are starting to look a little stiff in that photograph.

I'll have to look into that. I'm most interested in what it might reveal about the pre-North America days of my ancestry. I have quite a bit of good documented ancestral information from both sides of my family since they got off the boat. There is some controversy as to the area of origin of my father's family within Europe. It would be very interesting to see how that coincides with the DNA information. Thanks for the information!
