A South Side tax preparer who had his office raided by the Internal Revenue Service on Tax Day in 2005 has been indicted on 12 counts of federal tax fraud.
Ernest Barreda, 45, is charged with four counts of subscribing and filing false individual income tax returns and eight counts of aiding and abetting preparation of false individual income tax returns, according to the indictment filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court.
Barreda is the owner of A Mountain Income Tax, 4202 S. 12th Ave., which he has operated since 1985, according to Arizona Daily Star archives.
The indictment alleges that between February 2003 and February 2005 Barreda knowingly prepared false federal income tax returns for many of his clients.
“It was part of his scheme to defraud the IRS to ‘find’ ways to obtain tax refunds and benefits for his clients which were unjustified and unlawful,” the complaint reads.
IRS agents executed a search warrant on Barreda’s office on April 15, 2005, in the process closing the office to last-minute filers.
The indictment also alleges that Barreda had nearly $250,000 in unreported gross income between 2001 and 2004.
