Hmmm.... "misdemeanor tax evasion," eh? The media continues to not quite get it right on some of these federal criminal tax stories.

Former Mets, White Sox pitcher Jerry Koosman faces sentencing for income tax evasion
August 31, 2009

Jerry Koosman -- a onetime White Sox pitcher who helped the New York Mets win the 1969 World Series -- is to be sentenced for tax evasion Thursday in Madison, Wis.
The two-time All-Star pitcher, now 66 and living in Osceola, Wis., pleaded guilty in May to willful failure to file a federal tax return, a misdemeanor. He admitted he failed to pay federal income taxes for 2002, 2003 and 2004, defrauding the government out of as much as $90,000.
He agreed with the judge that he'd been "suckered" by anti-tax rhetoric. According to court documents, Koosman told investigators he researched tax laws and concluded that only federal workers, corporate employees and District of Columbia residents were subject to federal taxes. He could face up to a year in prison.
Koosman pitched for the Sox from 1981 to 1983, finishing his first season tied for the league lead in losses, with a record of 4-13, then coming back with 11-7 records each of the next two seasons -- including 1983, when he helped the Sox win the American League West title. In 1984, pitching for the Philadelphia Phillies, he gave up Pete Rose's 4,000th career hit. AP

Former Pitcher Sentenced for Tax Evasion in Wis.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - A federal judge in Madison has sentenced a former New York Mets star pitcher to six months in prison for not paying his taxes.

Prosecutors say Jerry Koosman, a former all-star who helped the Mets win the 1969 World Series, didn't pay federal income taxes for 2002, 2003 and 2004, costing the government as much as $90,000.

According to IRS agents, the 66-year-old Koosman, of Osceola, told them he had researched tax laws and concluded they applied only to federal workers, corporate employees and District of Columbia residents.

He pleaded guilty in May to misdemeanor tax evasion for 2002 in a deal with prosecutors.
