A federal grand jury this week indicted a San Rafael man on five counts of tax evasion.
Frank J. Laereman is alleged to have willfully falsified joint income tax returns filed with his spouse for the years 2002 and 2003 and failed to file returns for 2004 through 2006, according to Tuesday's indictment.
The indictment stated the false returns listed the joint taxable income as zero dollars when in fact the couple's joint taxable income exceeded the amount stated on the forms.
The maximum penalty for each count of tax evasion is five years in prison and a fine of $250,000, plus restitution, according to officials with the U.S. Attorney's Office in San Francisco.
