Kent Hovind is one of the leading lights in Young Earth Creationism.

I don't think that's been true for a while, possibly a whole decade.

I'm still trying to figure out who Peter Reilly is. I've read other bits of his stuff and he seems to pick and choose what he sees.

He used to manage an accounting office for one of the big firms (Grant Thornton), but has since "retired" into private practice.

He "moonlights" writing tax/accounting related columns for Forbes On-Line.

He's quite an interesting fellow in my opinion; if you have time to research his background.

He was raised Catholic, and has been more recently involved with the Unitarian Universalists, but not so much lately I gather.

I am listening to Paul Hansen's identity hearing so you don't have to.

To summarize: fingerprints on a letter mailed in the case match the guy in front of the judge.

Then Hansen attempts to get bail. Apparently he's a nice person who would never pose a flight risk. But he also has a history of 'failure to appear in court' which doesn't bode well for someone who is asking to be released on a promise to appear in court in the future.

But this is different. Apparently, all those other times he was "simply trying to protect society by establishing a continued system that they are to follow by adhering to the Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution by having all the elements for verified evidence and so forth on the record before they can issue a warrant."

"The reason I did not go to Florida on a subpoena... there is no compelling law on this document told them that this appears to be just an invitation there is no compelling law notifying me of a duty to appear - only the word "summons" is on there... there is no notice on the document that if I did not appear that such consequences would be established."

Apparently if they had shown him the law he would have been a "good neighbor" and "down there right away." Because I always have to show my neighbors the law for them to be good neighbors.

Apparently the court should be able to "perceive that [he has] studied law in the past."

Three guesses whether yer man got bail. First two don't count.

The summons also mentioned providing samples of handwriting. Did that come up during the hearing? Are they, perhaps, seeking the identity of the person who addressed the envelope(s)?

I would like to see Kent Hovind get a mental evaluation as part of the process of advancing his current case; not to excuse his behavior (I don't think he's that far gone), but to possibly explain it in the context of mental illnesses.

I suppose the feds would not ask for one, and Kent would not ask for one unless he should repent and wish to use it to help mitigate against the consequences of any deal he may be able to make with the feds.

On all of the cop shows, the one who flips first is the one to get the deal.

Will Kent flip?
Will Paul flip?

Will they go together, hand in hand, through the prosecution process?

It didn't come up. At least, I don't think so. By memory, Hansen's fingerprints were found on the envelope; a page entitle "Warning" (or something similar) and another page. Fingerprints themselves don't mean that he wrote or mailed any of the above, only that he handled it.

Hansen was asked to give a handwriting sample to the grand jury, which might have answered that particular issue. (The taking and providing of a handwriting sample for comparison purposes is not a violation of an individual’s Fourth Amendment right against self incrimination.)

As I recall, Hansen admitted during his hearing his association with Kent Hovind and CSE.

Under the circumstances, it would seem that such an admission would make it most difficult for him to successfully argue that the government had the wrong man.

Nice fantasy, but that is about what it is. Kent has several problems, first on the list being Kent, and I really don't think their is either cure or remediation for that. Second, he is a prime example of narcissistic personality disorder, he exhibits all the symptoms and pathologies, and there really isn't much that can be cone about that either. Lastly, he's a liar, hypocrite, and an all around general ass. He'd have to admit to the first two and then do something about the last part, and he's show no inclination towards any of them.

His argument is that PAUL JOHN HANSEN was charged with the crimes, whereas he is actually Paul John Hansen, Paul-John: Hansen or somesuch.

And also that the US does not have jurisdiction over him because he, or his crimes, were not in land that is a possession or territory of the United States.

The scheduling order for the Dec. 1, 2014 Hovind trial was posted today.

It looks to me that Hovind and Hansen may have separate trials, but I may not be reading things correctly. Maybe that will be resolved through motions.

While it is pretty much boiler plate material in the scheduling order, I did think it interesting that it covers mental conditions as a defense and plea bargaining.

Maybe those factors will become relevant; maybe not.

This may sound petty, but I don't find Hansen's legal troubles to be worth the $2.40 that PACER charges for an audio download.
