Rules, we don't need no rules...

Post by Gregg »

As is my custom, I am posting what I think, as a long, long time contributor/moderator of this site. That doesn't mean its the official Quatloos policy, I'm not one of the people who can go off all by myself and make policy. That said, I've been saying what I'm gonna say here again, and in 10 years + no one of any importance has had any serious disagreement with it. Your results may vary, offer not open to employees, associates, interns, Virgin Island Gunsmiths or residents of Iowa, Somalia, North Korea or American Samoa.

Someone, I am told, has been complaining about what they are allowed to post, how some moderators have responded to their PMs and have demanded to see a copy of "The Rules".

We don't have rules. There is no parliamentary procedure for what is allowed and not allowed, and what one person may post and it be allowed, honestly, could be not allowed from another poster. There is no set policy for how many warnings you get, how long you might be on moderated status, or anything, really. If you don't like it, tough, I feel your pain. (no, I don't actually)

The purpose of this site is to serve as a resource on scams, a reference on people who runs scams, and a central information source to people, in and out of official positions in government, on scams. We have, as regulars, some of the most knowledgeable people in the subject that I have seen anywhere and also, you might notice, we have quite a few people who have been contributing to the site for a long time.

We make fun of people, some of the people we cover practically beg us to. We are, considering our stated purpose and subject, a pretty light hearted forum. But what we ain't, and ain't ever gonna let anyone make us, is a place where "internet fights" break out, with back and forth bickering and ego swinging...so if you can't get along with someone, I cordially invite you to get lost. If what you're posting is to "win the argument" please don't. If you can't keep it civil, then this isn't the place for you. That's a good start to our "standards", which is how I prefer to look at what some call rules.

Standards, as opposed to rules, are not codified, they are what we, or any individual mod may think they are at any given time. A US Supreme Court Justice, Potter Stewart, was once asked to define what pornography was. His reply, "I can't say, but I know it when I see it" one of my favorite quotes. (another, BTW, when told he was being blackmailed, and the toll could eventually climb to $1 million, when a million was a lot of money, "We could get that, I know where a million could be got,,, in cash,,,, but it would be wrong" Richard M Nixon)

So, just know this as regards rules. I can't say. But I know it when I see it. Also, if another mod makes a decision, don't go looking for another to reverse it, this isn't the NFL, there is no replay rule. Even if a wrong decision is made, unless its especially egregious, I'm not going to second guess it, and doubt anyone else would.

And if you don't like it, well, the complaint department is open from midnight to 12:08 AM EDT, in Manchester New Hampshire, you must apply in person and have an appointment, which can only be scheduled after an in person interview, for which an appointment is needed. This is not a democracy. We are, as most should know, run by a benevolent dictatorship established under the aegis of the International Royal Illuminati Cabal, and your continued presence here is at the pleasure of our staff. :snicker:

Now, we return you to our regular programming schedule...

Is that an airborne dachshund in my rear view mirror?

This place is something of a refuge in the scary nasty jungle of the interweb and as such I am amazed at how well it preserves this rather special atmosphere from us hot blooded psoters when we're on the track of something close to our hearts.

Having suffered, to my shame, from the excisions of moderation, all I can say is it's sometimes easy to fall into the trap of getting a bit too precious and it's good to have moderators who care enough about the integrity of the site to stop it descending into a pit of bickering and point scoring.

Of course in my case it was completely unfair but at the end of the day, they are the moderators and as I see it I have a choice of shutting up and getting on with it or bitching myself into a ban. I'd guess the moderators have better things to do with their time than argue the fine points of what's fair and what's not so my advice would be to swallow it and move on before you get spat out and moved on.

Of course you were treated completely unfairly. What's the point of my having unlimited power if I can't use it in a vindictive arbitrary manner?

In my book, I try to treat each poster here as unfairly as possible. Thus, when I get complaints about being unfair in my moderation, I know I am doing my job.

Does the fact that 1500 of my children every week make the journey to Iowa whereby they immediately become residents of the state, albeit of the porcine variety, mean that I have to leave now? I've only been here for one year + 5 days....

On a more serious note I view Quatloos' posting rules as "rules, we don't need no effin rules". I am here At Her Majesty's Pleasure and if my posts offend too many people, or sometimes simply the wrong person so be it and I shall retire graciously to lick my wounds. BTW, I vastly appreciate Quatloos, the advice I have been given, the aid in my own personal battles with scammers, and simply the opportunity to have a public repository for information about the antics of certain FMOTL. It says something about the quality of a forum when "official" investigators are following it and at times have told me not to post since it would hinder the progress of a case.

That is one of the reasons I take keeping it a civil place so seriously. Thank you for helping me make my point.

Yiam hasn't been treated unfairly enough in my opinion. I think he is a secret moderator himself.
Anyway, no complaints from me, I think this place is well run , the contributors are excellent especially in their debunking of internet lunacy , I'll try to sneak in a political comment now and then to keep you on your toes.

Burnaby49. A living example of how absolute power corrupts absolutely and the role of alcohol in the arbitrary application of vindictive redaction. God only help us if he ever gets access to real beer.

I spent last Saturday afternoon getting hammered participating in a Vancouver CAMRA chapter cask ale sampling. Six ounce samples for $2.00. I sampled immoderately. So be afraid. When I'm in the mood to do a moderating rampage the necessary inspiration is available.

Alright... no rules.

Let's talk politics.

Ok, maybe there's 1 actual rule.

That's not a rule, it's an exit strategy.

OK Wake Up! I just deleted yout post. You've had your chance to vent and rant and the topic is over. I'm not going to allow you to keep it up forever and infest other discussions with it. Anything else on your illusionary mistreatment gets deleted. Arbitrary, vindictive, unfair? Sure, whatever. But if you won't stop I'll do the job for you.
