I'm familiar with Goathland and the steam railway, it was one of the first places I checked. I've been through it numerous times to have a beer or two in the CAMRA rated heritage pub the Birch Hall Inn at Beck Hole.

But while Goathland itself has a pub, the Goathland Hotel, I couldn't find a Green there.

Actually that looks very good. I've not been there myself although I've driven right by it on the B6265. It should fit my wife's requirements nicely, thanks.

Not quite village green material, but if she wants a nice day out, Stanhope in Weardale (County Durham) is a good area to visit - https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@54.74729 ... 312!8i6656

I know it's not on the itinerary this time, but if you're ever down Gloucestershire way, then the village green at Frampton on Severn takes some beating - 22 acres, 3 ponds (complete with a pair of swans), 2 pubs, post office etc.

I like Durham and its cathedral. I stayed there last trip. Wife and I may visit. One thing that constantly surprises me about Britain is scenes like this, south of Stanhope;

By Canadian standards Britain is tiny but with 2/3 again of Canada's population. You'd think it was crowded beyond belief. Yet, in the north, large empty areas like this are commonplace. Same with Scotland. Then again there's greater London.

Thanks I've saved it for future reference. My wife initially envisioned an impossible trip. She wanted London, Cornwall, Bath, Jane Austin's birthplace, the Cotswolds, Edinburgh, Lincoln, Robin Hood's Bay, Yorkshire dales, Lancashire, even some of the St. Bees to Robin Hood's Bay walk. The list was endless. All in a little over three weeks. I told her we could do it if we drove shifts 24/7 and slept in the car. So I told her to pick either the north or south this trip and we'll try and do the other some other time. She chose north but that doesn't mean I won't be searching for village greens in the south in the future.

If you're in the north and call in at The People's Republic of Hull give me a nudge... I'll buy you a pint. 8)

At the Polar Bear. Somehow I missed that fine establishment.

I've been to Hull over a dozen times, lost count, because my mother came from there and obsessively returned as often as possible. I've been there when it was a prosperous fishing town! Even without her I visited frequently to see relatives and pub. I even took my wife and children 20 years ago. But now all of my mother's relatives are gone. However, if wife wants it on the itinerary, I'll take you up on the offer. We'll be close, Scarborough and Robin Hood's Bay.

Very close to where I took my screenshot. The northern Pennines are almost empty.

Once worked with some IT guys from Kolkata. They were gobsmacked that the whole population of Scotland was less than half their city.

And the south is now open for village greens! I'd said how we weren't going to visit south England this trip because we were heading north. That has been curtailed to some extent. We were planning three nights in Edinburgh but it fell through. Enormously expensive for hotel rooms to the point that my wife, who is the one who wants to go to Edinburgh, told me to forget it. She said she wouldn't enjoy visiting there knowing what it cost. Fine by me. So now we're not going further north than York. She also wanted to go to Blackpool but I talked her out of it. Last time I went it was overwhelmingly loud nightclubs and drunken louts and hen parties puking in the street.

So that frees up four nights and a lot of back and forth. So we're heading south to before returning to London, not sure where yet. Cornwall is too far but Salisbury, Cotswolds, Glouchester, Shrewsbury all in range. I now have these possibilities;
For genuine imitation Olde-Worlde-Charme places the Cotswolds would probably be the best place to look.
I know it's not on the itinerary this time, but if you're ever down Gloucestershire way, then the village green at Frampton on Severn takes some beating - 22 acres, 3 ponds (complete with a pair of swans), 2 pubs, post office etc.

Finally got the trip planned in detail and two village greens make the cut. Linton near Grassington in Yorkshire because it's very attractive and literally right on route. We're heading south from the Tan Hill Inn (highest altitude pub in Britain) to Skipton and Linton is on the road. And, at the cost of an hour and a half detour, Finchingfield because it's as close as I'm going to find to what I think wife wants. Thanks everybody for all the suggestions.

I know both Linton and Finchingfield, having lived in reasonable proximity to both at different times.

Both are beautiful villages, enjoy.

Lincoln- I met a freeman, a real freeman and not freeman nutbars :D
There is a freeman called Frank, and he is a barber! He is kind and friendly and his shop is a like a museum. He showed my the Vulcan bombers pictures and Lancaster bombers pictures. Must visit him again in the future.

I imagine some UK forum members are also freemen of the right kind.

If you're near Grassington call in at Burnsall 2 miles away. The village green runs next to the river, only 100 people live there but it has a Church, a shop, couple of cafes and 2 pubs, it's a really pretty place.
