Some months back I was on a bus when a guy got on without a mask and then got off at the next stop not much more than 50m down the road just as I was getting up to get off at the one after that.

I asked the bus driver if it wouldn't have been quicker to walk and he said the guy was known to them and was just spoiling for a fight. Other drivers had challenged him and he'd pulled the asthma trick but was, unsurprisingly, unable to produce an inhaler or explain how his asthma was so severe made him exempt when he was still OK to be out and about without his inhaler. It's pretty much page one, book one of "How To Be Asthmatic" and the thing the nurse will nag you about every single clinic... Never go anywhere without your Ventolin.

I have asthma and I quite like masks in this weather. Nice warm, humid air to inhale when I don't have a roll-up stuck in me gob.

Shopping at Asda this weekend I was amazed at the number of folk not wearing masks in store. I’ll wear one out of respect for others who’d feel threatened if I didn’t or in the hope that it might actually be slowing or preventing this disease.

When I emerged into the sunshine I realised that a theme emerged for the non-mask brigade. They were ALL

Female
Significantly overweight
Of uncertain age but the wrong side of 45.

They also uniformly waddled about oozing self entitlement, in unspoken terms challenging anyone to have a pop.

Now I am not misogynistic in any way at all as the current Mrs ES would confirm if I slapped her on the backside and demanded a cup of tea, two sugars.

Whether you think masks add or detract to prophylactic efforts to control C19 I think there is a “large” minority actively seeking to provoke a response on this issue. We’re about to get locked down again, let’s hope the recidivist anti-maskers go shopping on line.

The retail outlet I work in serves a population containing a higher than average proportion of entitled bourgeois new age types. We've had BIG signs up since March saying we only take card payments. The other day one of the local hippy types came in without a mask (there's so much 'anxiety' round here you wouldn't believe it..) and got snippy about the fact we wouldn't take her money. Asked if she had a card (we'd make an exception for the genuinely financially excluded) she admitted she had 'But I've taken the money out now'. Expected us to cave in, and was quite shocked when we stuck to our guns.

Since March we've been doing most of our food and household shopping online and if we do need to go into a shop, it's been the local Aldi's an hour before closing, when there's usually only half a dozen people in there. My raised beds have paid off this past year, keeping us in veg throughout the year, and we've stocked up on essentials. I've been working from home the whole time. Luckier than most, I think, as I have the luxury of being able to avoid people who don't want to wear a mask. I feel sorry for front-line workers across all businesses and services who aren't able to do that.

If he does not want (refuses) to wear a mask, WHY should he adhere to ANY social convention. WHY IS HE WEARING ANY CLOTHES?? The logic is the same, I believe.

It is.

Let's say you had a skin disease and it would be more comfortable for you to walk around without clothes... Or just you didn't want to wear them. You could make exactly the same arguments to support your position as these kooks do for refusing to wear a mask.

Really. Well considering it's been a battle here in the states about women being allowed to walk topless in public I would think not. Several court fights and much lobbying later there are areas where women can walk topless, if they so wish, legally. Let them know they use the exact same arguments. See how long you last. And that's not even over a medical condition, it's just because they believe they have to right to do so.

And if someone had a skin condition then I'm sure they would find clothing that would make them comfortable so, no, the argument is not the same.

I get your point but it's irrelevant and wrong.

Let me try to explain some basic logic... The arguments the anti-mask loons are using to avoid the heinous imposition of having to wear a mask during a pandemic could be used in exactly the same way and with exactly the same legitimacy (none) to argue that a man with a skin infection of the groin should be allowed to walk about with his meat and two veg on display.

That doesn't mean that the arguments for walking around naked... Good, bad or indifferent though those arguments may be, could also be used to argue against wearing masks during a pandemic.

"I have mild asthma therefore I don't have to wear a mask" and "I have a thrush infection on my goolies therefore I don't have to wear trousers or pants" are equivalent.

"I have mild asthma therefore I don't have to wear a mask" and "I as a woman should be allowed to walk about topless if men can" are NOT equivalents. They are different arguments. One is about public health and the other is about sexual inequality...

Lockdown protest in London today, 30 gathered, 12 arrested. One heard to say "I stand under common law, not maritime law and this is assault" as he was put into handcuffs by police officers.

Way to edit a post to make it completely different than it was.

Huh. This poor guy. He's gone from having asthma to having a skin ailment to having a crotch infection. Yeah, I remember what you actually typed. I had a buddy call me one time and say, man that skank gave me drippy dick, which was his description of the clap. Pretty sure there isn't an argument to walk around dripping and dicking around naked. But I guess you're talking more about something like rotten crotch. Pretty sure the last thing you would want at that point is something, like your legs, rubbing on it so you would put on a salve of some type, probably some bandages, and a good pair of underwear to separate all the parts afflicted so they don't rub. Nope, don't see an argument there to walk around naked. The skin ailment you originally referred to, was that poison ivy or maybe leprosy? I know I've had poison ivy before, pretty badly and in some very embarrassing places. Girlfriend at the time liked to have fun in the great outdoors so it happened on occasion, young and stupid and all that. Plenty of calamine lotion or oatmeal lotion, some very soft bandages in the appropriate places, and some good soft clothes to cover up with so nothing hit it since even air make it itch and ache. So, no, don't see an argument there either. Pretty sure that someone with leprosy would not want to go out into public to start with, although I must use the caveat that I don't actually know someone with leprosy so I can't reliably make a comment. It's almost like you just pulled shit out of your ass to put arguments into someone else's mouth.

So he could make those arguments. He could also trip over his shoelaces and break his neck. He could win the lottery tomorrow and buy a small country somewhere. He could go home and find his wife in bed with another dude. Pretty sure all of those things are far more likely than someone saying that they have a medical condition therefore they should be able to walk around naked. As was previously pointed out the examples you gave have no basis in reality or logic. Even your amended ones.

As far as my original statement goes they are the exact same argument. Both are arguing for the lack of something, for whatever reason. They both feel that they should not have to wear something. And it is not something that there is a reasonable alternative. Every single medical condition you listed there is an alternative to, there is a treatment for other than not wearing clothes. A mask you either wear or you don't, just like a top. Either you wear it or you don't. By your logic a woman could also make the argument that she could walk around naked because reasons. Yet that wasn't the case made, was it. Women made the argument that they should be allowed to not wear something. Nudists, on the other hand, have made the argument that they should be able to not wear clothes. And since they come in male and female form I'm pretty sure it wasn't from sexual inequality. People who don't wear masks argue that they should not have to wear something that's not even clothes, which is why this entire stretch was completely irrelevant. Had absolutely nothing to do with wearing a mask. It was a stretch to start with and you made it even more of a stretch and somehow thought that putting words into another's mouth simply because you don't like their reasons was somehow logical. It isn't. Kinda the opposite actually.

You know I struggled for a long time with my role on this forum. I was a businessman, a contractor, not a lawyer or tax specialist. But I can smell bullshit a mile away. I don't use fancy words, I never was in the debate club, and sometimes I have a hard time expressing what I'm thinking. I didn't reply yesterday since I was busy getting pre-op procedures done for my heart surgery next week. Had to get another CT scan done, some bloodwork, and some other little things done. I bring this up because I'm gonna impart a little reality.

I will not, under any circumstance, put a mask fully on. Period, end of discussion. With my heart and lung issues a mask is absolutely unbearable. My cardiologist made me wear one covering my mouth and nose. Within 5 minutes I was dripping sweat. Within 10 I was hyper ventilating. After that started I removed it and told him I was not putting it back on. He agreed. Since this entire thing started I've been hospitalized multiple times for different issues, including last January for what they're pretty sure was COVID. There were no tests for it available at the time but when their lab work came back as "respiratory flu of unknown origin" after 3 regular flu tests came back negative, the doctors are pretty certain I had it. Have I ever had an antibody test done? No. No one thought it was worth doing, I already made it through it why worry now? Every single time I was told I didn't have to wear a mask at all when I got upstairs and none of them had an issue with me wearing it off my nose downstairs. So all this crap you keep bringing up, and calling people "kooks" for not wearing a mask the way everyone else does, refers to me. And I'm a little sick of it. Whether or not this particular person has something severe enough to justify his actions I don't know. Not only was I not there I'm not him. Neither are you.

As far as these lockdowns go when they started doing them here the governor made an order stating that any one caught in an open public area without going back and forth to a store would be arrested and fined up to $1,000. At the time I was homeless, living in my truck in a Walmart parking lot. So, according to his order, I should have been arrested and fined for the crime of being homeless. Fortunately the local police departments refused to enforce it and eventually the legislature grew some balls and told him that it wasn't gonna happen. When I brought this up in a different place I had someone laugh at me and tell me I deserved to be arrested and locked up. At the same time this happened all the churches were forced to close. At the time I was eating at the food pantries at those churches 4 days a week and so were a lot of other homeless. They also closed the local restaurants, which is were a lot of us went to keep warm. This all happened during winter time after all. They also closed all the shelters to new incoming homeless but were still throwing the homeless out that had reached the end of their time. So not only were they not helping any homeless, they were creating even more. So they were kicking people out into the cold all in the name of being "safe". So I hope you can understand why I could really give a damn less about any of these orders. Everything the government did to make people "safe" hurt a lot of people in ways you can't even begin to understand. I was one. A lot of the elderly depended on being able to use transport systems to get back and forth, went to the county rec clubs for entertainment and food, and basically had no interaction with anyone after that. It took 6 months before the county or state did anything at all to address the homeless issue. Know what their solution was? Rent hotel rooms and provide 3 meals a day, IF you agreed to share rooms with a complete stranger and only eat what they provided.

When they allowed stores to reopen they then started requiring masks to enter. You think the county or state provided them? Nope. If it wasn't for the one local church going out and purchasing masks for a lot of us homeless and delivering them to us a lot of us would have either starved or been locked up, if the police had been forced to do so. The local grocery store told me not to worry about it so I was okay but not everyone was that fortunate. So I've seen the effect these lockdowns had on real people who were in no position to do anything about it.
