Northern Ireland pseudolaw matter - utility meter sabotage

Post by DNetolitzky »

Hi everyone,

I ran across this news article that reports on what seems to be a written Northern Ireland decision criticizing in-court and documentary pseudolaw tactics:

https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news ... 40192.html

It's colourful at least.

I'm not at all adept with UK case law, and was wondering if someone might find this posted online?

Thanks so much for your help!

Magistrates Court decisions aren't usually published. But it's an interesting read.

From posts on Correct The Unlawful Legal System and other similar FB groups, the wheels seem to be falling off the bus for the "change your meters and get free 'leccy and gas" freeloaders, with many reporting warrants of entry and pre-payment meters fitted. To my surprise, the magic words on a bit of paper stuck on the front door explaining that ringing the doorbell will cost £10,000 and so the enforcement officers must go away don't seem to work.

Since energy companies haven't been applying for warrants to apply pre-payment meters since February 23, the issue won't arise as much. It will arise though if either apparent consumption drops to zero, even though it's clear the premises are occupied, or the occupier cleverly :sarcasmon: notifies the company that they've removed the meter. In either case the supplier can obtain a warrant on safety grounds, and once they're in, they're entitled to exchange the meter for a safe one, which will usually be a pre-payment.

The guidance from Child Poverty Action group suggests that if meter tampering is found with no evidence of energy theft the the supplier will normally either remove the dodgy meter and replace with prepayment. If there is evidence of energy theft they they will disconned.

There's a regular trickle on the Telegram groups of people reporting being disconnected. Reactions vary from "sod them, get yourself a generator that'll teach them" to claiming the poster must be a paid troll trying to scare them, or to simply deleting the posts.
