Reminds me of one of William Safire's NYT magazine language articles when he looked for the origin of the term "WTSHTF". One theory was that the saying developed as a result of a drunk at a bar going upstairs and mistaking an overhead fan for the john...

I doubt the Justice Department or the S.E.C. will nail the big financial firms and hedge funds as under the law they could. And having grown up in a part of the country where the hedge funds have become as much a part of the tax base as the casinos at the other end of the state, I doubt the government will do due dilligence. If they did, it could get very ugly, they could keep digging and digging until all the insider trading is exposed until the Ralph Naders of the world can finally say "See, I told you so".

On the other hand, those who have flagrantly broken these laws have earned whatever justice gets served them. Having known some of the workers in the hedge funds, of which there are thousands, I don't think they are much different as those who have gotten caught and are doing time, only slicker. S.A.C. and Goldman probably have sufficient resources to weather the storm unless a key witness spills the beans, that's the wildcard. The less well-endowed targets of this investigation are, of course, toast.
