One of the persons arrested as one, "Samuel Davis."

Is this the same Sam Davis of 1099-OID fame?

Rabbi Shawn Talbot Rice, JD is admitted to appear before the courts of The Order of Gershom, a religious order. Rabbi Rice is Authorized to Practice before the Federal Tribal Courts of the Pembina Nation, Pembina License to Practice. He is a graduate of a European law school with a Letter of Law Bachelor (LLB) degree. He has been admitted to a Letter of Law Masters program in the United States and starts that curriculum in the spring of 2009.

Law enforcement officers and public officials around the country are encountering members of a new and active anti-government extremist group that calls itself the "Little Shell Pembina Band of North America." Members of the group claim that they belong to a "sovereign" Native American tribe and therefore are not subject to laws and regulations; in reality, the "Little Shell Pembina Band" is part of the anti-government "sovereign citizen" movement. Its members' activities range from driving with bogus license plates to perpetrating insurance fraud schemes to tax evasion.

Founder: Ronald Delorme
Based: Primarily in North Dakota and Washington, but members can be found across the nation.
Splinter Group: The group has split into two competing factions, each using the same name.
Media: Internet, videos, seminars, fax solicitations Approach: Claims to be a sovereign Native American tribe and not subject to the laws of the United States.
Ideology: Anti-government and sovereign citizen; members may also belong to a wide variety of sovereign citizen, militia, or white supremacist groups.
Sounds like another "Nuwabian" type thing.

I have a ton of background info on this case. As soon as the airline finds my luggage, I'll be able to power up my laptop and post some juicy bits.

I live in the Las Vegas area and just saw a TV news report on the "Sovereign Movement" folks who were busted last week. Seems they are proponents of the "straw man" system and insist there is a secret one million dollar account held in every person's name. Apparently, among their programs were ways to claim title to the (non-existent) money and use it to pay off debts.
I found the website of one of the arrested. Seems that "Rabbi" Shawn Rice has a license to practice law issued by none other than the Federal Tribal Courts of the Pembina Nation - Little Shell Band of North America!
http://www.riceandassociates.net/
His website makes interesting reading, complete with dubious references to sovereignty issues and use of CAPITAL LETTERS and bold type to prove his points (I'll wager he's one of those "red crayon" types). You can even see his license here: http://www.riceandassociates.net/Pembin ... actice.jpg

The "tribe" exists solely on paper and has ties to a number of "sovereign" groups.

Shawn Talbot Rice's name appears on a list of people ordained by a group called the "Union of Nazarene Yisraelite Congregations". (http://www.2house.org/page.php?page=registry) They appear to be something along the lines of a "Jews for Jesus" group.
Rice also claims to be a member of the "Messianic Israel Alliance". (http://www.mim.net)

His bio on his website reads:
"Shawn Rice is NOT currently a member of any United States State Bar Association. Shawn Rice is a Law School Graduate and ordained Rabbi.
Shawn Rice teaches law (halacha) at various times to the Jural Society of Torah Assemblies (http://www.JSOTA.com) of Phoenix, Arizona within The Order of Gershom. Shawn Rice is a Legal Advocate of the Ecclesiastical Court of Justice for the religious membership of Society of the Israelite Mosaic Paternal Ethic (SIMPE), Bat Alef Tav, and Tzur Yisrael of Arizona."

There is a website for the Order of Gershom (http://www.gershom.org) but it requires a password to enter. But if you want to join, however, Mr. Rice has graciously provided us with a form:
http://www.riceandassociates.net/Religi ... 050118.doc

Page 1 includes the following: "I, <my name>, hereby request to join the religious Order of Gershom, a body politic separate and apart from the secular world."

This appears to be a quasi-Hebrew themed sovereign citizen/straw-man set up.

Keep tabs on these folks. This could prove to be interesting.

We discussed the "Little Shell Pembina" folks in some detail on the old board, and they've been mentioned on the new board. Making a long story short, they're about as authentic as the Hekawis from "F Troop".

Love their home page. Click on any of the links - they all just lead to pages of adsense links.

Thanks for the welcome.

It appears the Little Shell Pembina's website had been yanked. A visit to http://littleshellpembinaband.us reveals a generic links page and the slogan "What you need, when you need it".

Perhaps they're laying low until this bust blows over?

I wonder if they still issue their faux tribal license plates?

Laptop? Checked in luggage? Either you have good backups and the replacement cost is a token sum, or you're doing something incredibly unsafe. If you worked for my company, I would have sent the IT goon squad after you. (Well, no, not really, but there is a lot of paperwork for that kind of thing :-)
