It's on the site where John MacDonald, who helped found Canada, was born.

John A. MacDonald if you don't mind. Apparently not just the site but the actual building he was born in on January 11, 1815 although there is some dispute.

http://news.nationalpost.com/news/canad ... birthplace

Canada managed to sever itself from Britain without a war although it took almost a hundred years longer than you Americans. Always in a rush. MacDonald was key in uniting the various Canadian colonies into one united country and was our first prime minister.

I don't think Peter can afford first-class office space in downtown Glasgow. Our first prime minister's birthplace must be a prime rental location. Needs a bit of a reno and good to go.

I saw a story yesterday that said that the Smithsonian is looking for a "Beer Historian" Someone who would be paid to travel the US sampling local brews and interviewing the personnel. Unfortunately, i have been unable to confirm it so far.

Umm, sorry Burnaby, but I wouldn't be surprised if the position in question requires US Citizenship. It is a government job and we can hardly have the nations official beer drinker be a foreigner after all.

All this memory lane stuff got me thinking, and then I remembered Speakers Corner, Marble Arch. The brits here won't understand my perspective, being a dirty colonist and all, but I always found Speakers Corner one of the most endearing things about London. America desperately needs something like it.

My first time ever in England was the Queen's official birthday. America could kind of use, if not a Monarch at least someone we like so much we give them 2 birthday's and they absolutely no power. If only we could neuter a Kardashian but I digress. Anyhow, the first time I'm in England, I've been on a plane for like 14 hours and I'm wide awake anyhow. We stayed at a hotel that was just around the corner from Bond Street a block or so from Speaker's Corner. I checked in, changed clothes and set out to discover London. The first place I stumbled on was Speaker's Corner and I spent a bit listening to the loonies who were quite clearly insane but unlike some American idiots, still seemed as Douglas Adams would say, Mostly Harmless. Anyhow I got bored and went to the tube, figured it out and rode the 4 stops to where the directions said to get off for LSE. I wandered around and found out where I needed to be on Monday and still feeling fresh, I set out to find Westminster, which to me at the time was the center of the universe, just something I wanted to see.
Anyhow, I heard some artillery firing and figured there was a parade somewhere, and headed towards it, across what I now know was St James Park, soon to become one of my favorite places, but still new. I eventually stumbled, now a little punch drunk from sleep deprivation, on to Pall Mall at the Victoria Statue in front of Buckingham Palace, and just then, here comes Her Majesty The Queen, in a carriage and all, dressed up for Trooping the Color, which to the yanks here is like the Military Birthday Party. Back then she still rode a horse for part of it I think, I've never seen the ceremony itself, just this, when the Queen, as close to me as a few yards, and I felt like she showed up just to welcome me to the UK. This was pre 9/11 mind you, but I was amazed at the apparent looseness of security, I'm not ever likely to get anywhere near as close to a US President even if I tried, much less just staggering out and almost running into her half out of my mind on melatonin and dopamine.
So now I'm all teary eyed and I know just a few weeks ago I told everyone I was Boycotting Britain after Brexit, but I've been looking with increasing desperation for a good vacation and aw hell, I think I'm going to come to England next year.
There, are you all happy? Its very important that you all prepare for this.
Some things you need to remember to help you prepare:

I do not drink in North America, and I do not drive in Europe. I know you're kind of confused on the whole "Europe" thing right now, but for purposes of this rule, I'm not gonna drive. Inform Scotland that I'm coming and I need something that was started at least before the last time I was there, and if they have a litre or so of something older than I myself am, send it down.

In all my journey's to your fair island, I have yet to find anyone who can cook. Make sure your Kentucky Fried Chicken outlets are prepared. That and Fish and Chips are the only foods in England I can remember not being boiled or pizza. I like pizza, I'm very fond of Fish and Chips, but I can live on KFC for as long as I'll be there, if need be.

If you happen to find someone who can cook, send him to London with a cooler full of really good steaks. And potatoes...to bake, not boil. The right way to do it is on the same fire you grill a good steak over, if you can resist the urge to boil the steak.

It's not necessary to bring out Her Majesty to greet me this time, but if Helena Bonham Carter is in town, that will do nicely. Her or Elizabeth Hurley.

I need the room to be stocked with Coca Cola, M&Ms, good bottled water, and if Liz Hurley is coming by, I'll need whipped cream, ping pong balls and some leather goods..

See y'all soon! If I decide to come I'll update you with plans so you either get my above list started or hire a hitman to meet me at Heathrow.

I checked, The Glenlivet Cellar Collection 1964 Cask Strength, it runs about £2000 a bottle. That should be okay on my end, someone check and make sure Helena can live with it. First time I flew to England from Vancouver it took well over a day in total. It was 1961 and we had to fly across the United States to New York in various twins, one of which had to make an emergency landing because of an engine fire. At New Youk we caught a BOAC Britannia turbo-prop which took about twelve hours to London, not counting the fuel stop at Gander.

Airline safety was so lax in those days that a kid could tell the engine was a problem before takeoff. At least I could and I was twelve. It was a twin turboprop and I sat over the wing where I could see both engines. It was a night departure and one exhaust was a straight blue flame while the other was orange gusts. I didn't know which was right but I knew they should match up. So ours, the orange gusts, finally caught fire and we ended up in Spokane.

I can match your story about the Queen. One day in 1971 I was driving down a Vancouver street when police made all traffic pull over. I had no idea what was going on so I waited. In a few minutes the Queen, Pierre Trudeau, the Prime Minster of Canada, and W.A.C. Bennett, the Premier of British Columbia drove by in an open car. She waved at me. I wsn't even aware that she was in town.

Anyhow if you want any recommendations about British pubs let me know. If you want whisky and you are going to Glasgow try the Pot Still.

I probably won't go north of Windsor, can you take a tour that includes St George's Hall? I'll want to spend at least a day in The British Museum and if its cloudy and grey that's how I prefer to wander around Westminster, somehow finding a cloudy misty rainy day has never been a problem for me in any stay over a few days. I want to go to the Dover chalk cliffs, which I have seen from the air but never from below airline altitudes. Umm, what else have I missed? The HMS Victory and I've seen the Tower of London before, but a guy who lives in a Well Armed Bunker Complex can never get enough of a Medieval Torture Research Center.

I've been on the Victory at least a half dozen times. Portsmouth is an easy train ride from London. King's Cross if I recall correctly. In 2006 we walked along the top of the cliffs of Dover, extremely nice walk along public footpath. It starts right in Dover. Never been to Windsor. I was in the British Museum this trip but didn't stay long, way too crowded. I was last in the Tower as a teenager. Here are a couple of shots of our Dover walk. That is the Dover Ferry Port in the background of one.
